Overfishing

Overfishing has a very major negative impact on fishes.  In the context of the bluefin tuna, overfishing has almost completely eliminated their population.  However, the bluefin tuna is not a major concern because it resides in the upper parts of the food web.  However, overfishing of smaller fish, such as anchovies, baitfish, and herring has profound impacts.  Many of the smaller fishes are being overharvested.  This in turn affects larger species like sharks and whales who directly or indirectly feed on these smaller fish.  If these fish were to become extinct, many others in the upper tiers of the food chain would also become extinct.

  1. How does overfishing relate to climate change?

  2. Overfishing upper levels of the food chain could increase population of lower level fish since you are reducing the predator. This can alter food chains drastically. But I agree, if you are going to talk about overfishing, you need to relate it back to climate change. I agree that overfishing is a big problem for fish, but is there a way you can relate it to climate change?

  3. I agree with the comments above. If you made another tab talking about the effects of climate change on fish, it would be much more effective than a tab on overfishing. Though overfishing is a problem, it is not directly related to climate change.
